This famous month also has a lot of things going on in it in addition to National Mushroom Month.

Back to school, the last vacation of summer, one last heat wave, the leaves start to turn colors and a special significance at Oley Valley Mushroom;
  its start-up month.  ‘Already!?’ you may exclaim.  ‘Yes, yes,  already.’ We say to one another as we start to find and source our materials to start the substrate.

The myriad of chores are endless; call this guy, order that,
where’s the buckets that work really nice for mixing, clean out the houses, power wash the racks, get the Shiitake blocks out of the incubation room, order the master mycelium; the list goes on and on. The general conversation is that all of this feels really great to start up again.  To see our familiar faces at the farmers markets, to call our chefs, and our CSA’s to let them know that we are going to have mushrooms!

We are thrilled to offer the tried and true favorites; Shiitake,
Oyster, Crimmini and Portabello.  In addition this year
we will be growing Maitake, PomPoms and Royal
Trumpets.

The new OV Mushroom Farm partners is yours truly and Tom, my husband.  Joe and Angie offered us the opportunity to be a part of their farm. We realized turning down an opportunity like this would be foolish and short sighted.  We accepted the opportunity and the
planning began.  So you will see me at the different markets, Malvern and occasionally Phoenixville – this is Joes
Market.  When I’m there, I get peppered with questions.  ‘Where’s the big man?’, ‘Where’s Joe?’, ‘When is Joe coming back?’. No, no I get it, you love Joe; he’ll be back next week.  I may be at Artisans and time to time at Downingtown. Angie will be manning the Malvern and Downingtown stands also.  Both Tom and I, look forward to
learning the mushroom farm and meeting all of the people that make this worth doing.

So, yes – we are starting up and we are excited for the new
season.

Love always and happy cooking –

 Ashley
